Option 1 for me ... though for some HD h.264 I must turn off the "filter loop" option otherwise I experience lag at some points of video.

sometimes you get lag play because some internal filters are disabled. you have to enable them at the option>internal filters.. that is if you use media player classic..

as for me i choose option 1.

If they are large resolution, but dont use a bitrate suited to that resolution then I can play them, which is some videos, surprisingly. Otherwise, Nope, cant play them Cry

i think it depends on the amount of bitrate and the profile use for the encoded file
higher profiles and bitrate need more hardware power as indicated here
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/system-requirement-for-x264-t333079.html

and the other thing is using the CoreAVC decoder than FFDshow like says here at this link http://x264codecs.hit.bg/

in my experience i can play DVD version (230 mb mkv) of claymore of eclipse fine they use high profile with 1300 bitrate and 480p for resolution (i know the settings by examining the file with media info) and my pc is using single core athlon64 3000 with 1 gb of ram and a NVIDIA 7300GS pci express video card dont know if my system can play bitrates exceeding 2000+ though i havent test out 350+ mb files that are normally HD yet because of low bandwidth and i just lucky to have a friends copy of claymore DVD version
