I would rather wait a bit for the quad cores to be a bit cheaper ....

also soon AMD plans to integrate GPU as one of cores ... (GPU will be ATI graphics as AMD owns ATI) .... Anyway having GPU as one of cores sounds very promising Smiley

Intel is better for compiling, AMD is better for gaming.
Intel uses alot less power than AMD, and has a lower chance of overheating, and for both those reasons is immensly better for laptops... Tongue

Now, I thought I posted here before, but apparently not... as evilguy said... Link us to the specs and we should be able to be more helpful Tongue

what ?

I have an AMD laptop and its battery life is in fact better then my friends Intel core duo ...  the batteries are the same class ...

Right now  for core duo and x2 it goes like this (from what I read before buying my laptop):
-AMD uses less power
-Core duo with the same clock is about 10-15% faster then Athlon x2 with the same clock ....

Odds are, the CPU is set to maximum when on battery, which is a setting with Intel. Doing that is foolish for several reasons
1. Second from Maximum and Maximum dont have much speed difference, but switching between them lowers my battery by 2 hours. The settings I use give me 4.5 Hours on my Intel laptop
2. Setting to the Maximum speed, while not substantially increasing the speed, causes the CPU to burn out much quicker.

Both AMD and Intel are defaulted to High CPU Usage, but I am fairly sure AMD doesnt have the option to change them. Honestly, I dont know where you read AMD uses less power, but I know for a fact that Intel uses less, and has potential to last twice as long as an AMD of the same specs.

By the way, maximum battery uptime on my laptop, 6 hours 43 minutes before it reached 10% and hibernated.

Thats all I have to say on that undecided

well for me the max is about 2 hours of normal work (writting, net, music , movie etc)... for my friend it's similiar but 10-15 minutes shorter and both laptops are using reduced clock speed if that's what you mean by "maximum".
Also IMHO the fact I'm using Linux and he is using Windows also meters... Windows is better at power saving , yet I win with him for this few minutes Smiley

Of course also other things meter most likely. I mean we have other different parts ... Maybe my ATI card uses less power then his nvidia one etc ...

btw what laptop you have ?  6 hours is very good score... do you have two batteries ?:

my info source:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=2&id=1904&pg=2

A more complex processor and yet less power hungry = you can't beat that combination. In fact, it's even better than the Intel Core Duo if the data specs published by both CPU vendors hold true.

I read several reviews like that ...

That site seems a bit Bias towards AMD, of course, I could be wrong...

About my laptop...
Acer Aspire 5570-4315

processor: Intel Core Duo T2450, 2GB Speed, 533Mh FSB, 2Mb L2 Cache
Ram: 1GB DDR2, Support dual Channel
Hard Drive: 160GB
DVD Super Multi DL
Built in Camera and Microphone
Stereo Speakers
14.1" WXGA CrystalBrite LCD
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950
Windows Vista

According to the box, the Battery Life is 3 hours... which is approximately correct, under fairly heavy usage, but just browsing the net using Wifi, chatting, text editing, I got it up past 6 hours with minimal speed decrease Tongue

AMD Turion 64 X2 is intended to be positioned against the Intel Core Duo was presented in 17. May 2006. The current consumption is not higher than with Centrino-Duo-notebooks (TL-45 with ATI Xpress and Mobility Radeon X300). This means, that approximative the same battery runtime and fan functions can be expected (with this chipset). However, the performance was 20% below the T2300 (1.66 GHz) due to the lower L2 Cache (Core Duo has 2048 Kbyte shared L2 Cache). Nevertheless, the performance is sufficient.

and here are banchmarks :
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

BTW I myself bought an AMD laptop because it was 50% cheaper then similiar  intel based laptop .... So the 20% performace drop is ok if you consider the price.

may 06? isnt something nearly a yr old no longer accurate? intel and AMD both have released various new chips since then and while i was doing my research (around june-aug 07) intel duo was said to generate a lot less heat than AMDs.
