Just a bit to much to ask ... It doubles the work ... and basicly is pointless  ...

you can play mp4 with cccp codeck pack  or VLC player ... both things are easy to install ...

My personal opinion is simple :  If u encode sth and upload do it in mp4 ... however if u have sth already encoded in rmvb upload it in it ... (becouse downloading avi and encoding takes time and bandwitch)

..............

Another thing is that not everybody can encode to rmvb ....  I for one have no posssibility of  encoding things in rmvb ....

You're correct, but before somebody wants to install CCCP she/he should uninstall all previous codecs from HDD because there could be some problems with incompatibility (just a little reminder for the newbies)... grin

For me H.264 (mp4) is the best solution - good quality and small size... tongue

^ Slayers TV  are converted rmvbs ... I used mencoder for it (a CLI prog).... Although for encoding to h.264 the source should be a very good quality so   converting rm >mp4 does not give such good results ....

Not recommended.
The quality only get worse if you do a rmvb -> h.264/mp4 conversion.

Well I can certainly agree with that .... though from 80 mb per episode Slayers rmvb  I  did a conversion to 50 mb H.264 ... Actually there is no loss in quality (comparing to orginal rmvb) though I had to use 375 for my bitrate !!!!  that is a lot ...

Simple. Rmvb sucks alot because of quality. When encoding to mp4, the quality stays put most of the time. Mp4 is alot better then rmvb.

I totally agree. Rmvb makes the quality suffer quite a bit and a lot of the video sometimes ends up looking chunky or something.

People, if you can't playback mp4 files on what you're currently using, it's been LOOOOONG overdue for you to upgrade your viewing program. I suggest Media Player Classic from K-Lite.

MP4 has lessef file size than RMVB..

I don't think RMVB really sucks.. Maybe the converter you have is the one who sucks.. RMVB for me gives a  better quality than MP4..

I prefer having them both - MP4 and RMVB. Than having those hard disk space killing avi and ogms..

H.264 is better ...

As for quality
40 mb  mp4  = 50-60 mb rmvb

However
70-80 mb mp4 is a lossless compresion in comparision to normal 170 mb xvid

with 70 - 80 mb RMVB you do not get loosless quality ... From my experience 90mb -100 mb RMVB give lossless

.............

Also note the blur effect for smaller RMVB ... H.264 smaller files are not blured

It's not that RMVB sucks ... It's just that it's worse then H.264 in terms of quality/size...

imho i feel that those series (e.g. blood+) that have been encoded in rmvb all the while should continue be encoded in rmvb and vice versa... then if the new system is mp4 then gradually shift things over? hmm.

i prefer mp4, it kinda promising format, and very portable. there are standalone  dvd players that can play mp4. and rmvb seem kinda stuck with real player
